Trained in Aberdeen as an MWD (Measurement While Drilling) field engineer. Responsibilities include the running of sophisticated drilling parameter measurement equipment for use in downhole navigation and formation evaluation.
Immediately on completion of the course, I was transferred to Borneo as a relief district engineer, handling the day-to-day business of the company which provides support for eight drilling rigs for in Sabah and Sarawak for Shell, and in Brunei for Elf. Responsibilities included liaison with clients on a daily basis regarding well planning and progress, service quality control, resource planning, personnel and equipment movements, and general onshore support for the operation as required.
BRUNEI SHELL PETROLEUM
Underwater Engineer
1989 to 1991
Contracted to BSP through ORCA, Aberdeen, to provide onshore support (with occasional trips offshore as client's representative) for company's underwater operations in Brunei. In addition to providing support for all marine and drilling operations, all the underwater inspection, repair and maintenance work on the 200 jackets in the area was managed through this office. Resources included a permanently available contract diving support vessel (DSV). Projects included pipeline and jacket installation and removal, workscope and procedures planning, scheduling, monitoring and reporting. Additional projects included the development of computerised reporting systems, writing inspection and service contract specifications, budgeting, contractor evaluation, the management of product trials and diving services tender appraisals.
SEDCO FOREX, Aberdeen
Trainee Rig Engineer
1989
Worked for 20 hours per week in the technical department while writing an M Sc thesis on software development for directional drilling. Carried out work on a number of projects in preparation for re- hire by the company on release form RGIT. Responsibilities included the development of incentive drilling proposals, work on an asset management database, standardisation of the 'Permit to work system' for north sea operations, and support for engineers offshore.
CONOCO (UK) Ltd, Aberdeen
Asst Onshore Co-ordinator
1987 & 1988
Two summer vacation periods were spent employed in the subsea operations group. Tasks included DSV logistics control, liaison with engineering, contractor and offshore personnel on operational requirements, operations analysis databases and invoice auditing and approval for the section.
SEDCO FOREX. Dallas
Drill Crew
1982 to 1985
Transferred overseas to work a 28/28 rota on the semi-submersible SEDCO-H. The rig was on contract to Elf Aquitaine and operated in Libya, Tunisia, and Morocco during this time. In addition to normal exploration and testing activities, special projects included the installation of subsea production facilities in Tunisia. With a lack of service support, there was a greater involvement in marine operations. Responsibilities increased, working as roughneck, derrickman, maintenance supervisor and training local personnel in rig operations and safety awareness.
SEDCO FOREX. Aberdeen

1980 to 1982
Valuable experience was gained over the complete range of drilling operations while working in the UK sector of the North Sea on the rigs, SEDCO J, H and 700. Tasks ranged from derrick work to mud pump and blowout preventor maintenance and pressure testing.
